The club started in New Maryland in 1990 at the elementary school and when we first began, we weren't sure how things would turn out. From all indications, we were the first Karate club in the village, and as I recall, the Mayor and Council were just a little apprehensive at first with regards to our program and how it would fit with in the community.  As with any working relationship, it develops over time. I believe that we have woven in nicely, and our relationship has only grown stronger over the years.

Leader Credentials:
Don Mazerolle has been studying Chito-Ryu Karate since 1976. Curious about martial arts in general, Don happened to come across Robert McInnes and Chito-Ryu Karate in Hampton, New Brunswick...and the rest as they say, is history.

In 1985, Don relocated to Fredericton New Brunswick where he continued his studies on Fredericton's north side. It was around this time that he met fellow Chito-Ryu student and wife to be, Kathryn Douglass.

In 1990, with Kathryn, Don opened the New Maryland Karate Club and has been the chief instructor ever since.

Chito-Ryu Karate is definitely a family passion in the Mazerolle household. Don is a 6th dan black belt (Renshi), while Kathryn is the highest ranking female student in Canada, holding a 5th dan black belt, and their son Laurie currently holds a 2nd dan black belt.

Some of Don Mazerolle's credentials include:

- Renshi - 6th dan black belt, Chito-Ryu
- Ni-Dan, Ryuku Kobujutsu
- Pan American "A" Class Referee
- Canada Dan Testing Committee Member
- National Chito-Ryu Tecnical Committee Member
