COLORED BELTS
The coloured belt system indicates the rank of karate students. It was "borrowed" from judo practicioners by Gichin Funakoshi (brought karate to attention of the world) when he opened his karate schools. The belts are ranked by skill level attained (kyu):

Soke is the son of O Sensei, the founder of the Chito Ryu style. From Japanese tradition, he is the leader for Chito Ryu Karate. |
Juniors are ranked from 10th Kyu to 1st Kyu. As they progress, they are given stripes to attach to the belts indicating they are progressing through their studies.
This system originated in the fact that the colours darken as the student progresses. As students progressed, they dyed their belt to the next colour. This was to save on the cost of buying a new belt in the early-mid 1900's. A karate club in Australia, during the 1970's were still dying their belts.
