BEGINNER'S CORNER

Karate can be a mysterious adventure to undertake. It is a martial art from Japan. The people on the island of Okinawa, Japan, were given an order by the ruling Japanese family to give up their weapons, amongst other things. With little choice, the people turned to Chinese techniques of fighting without martial weapons. The techniques of fighting were passed down from generation to generation. In the late 1800's, Japan opened its borders to allow foreigner's greater access to travel, and to trade. In turn, their fighting techniques were sought out, and gradually spread worldwide.

Karate has evolved throughout the centuries to its current state. If you take up the challenge of learning this martial art, you are climbing aboard a ship that set sail hundreds of years ago in a distant land of a distant culture. Keep in mind the traditions are based on Japanese culture of hundreds of years ago. The techniques have evolved as well, and continue to be changed today. The following links will provide insight into this martial art.
