Centuries ago, natives of Okinawa were forbidden by their feudal masters to carry weapons. In response, Okinawans learned to use their everyday farm tools as instruments of self-defense.

These skills have been passed down to the present day, and continue to be taught in martial arts clubs worldwide. It is not necessary to have experience in martial arts to learn kobujutsu, however we do find that it is an advantage.

The weapons studied are in order, bo (6 foot staff), sai (metal truncheon), tonfa (side-handle baton), nunchuka (flail), kama (sickles), and tekko (stirrup).

The instruction begins with the bo. As with karate, there are belt levels from white belt through to black.

Kobujutsu classes for adults are held in New Maryland throughout the year. There is a dedicated kobujutsu class on Sundays during the school year, with additional instruction on other occasions. It is not necessary to be a member of the New Maryland Karate Club to study kobujutsu with the New Maryland Kobujutsu Club.

A satisfactory and cheap Bo for beginners is a 6' dowel with a 1¼" diameter available at most building supply stores. Some sanding and varnishing may be advisible.

The New Maryland Kobujutsu Club is affiliated with several Kobujutsu Clubs throughout the Atlantic Provinces and Eastern Canada. The head instructor for Canada is Sensei Shane Higashi, based in Toronto.
